February top reads

February was a big month for reading – a total of eight books, plus a compulsion to consume every blog on WordPress in its entirety. I think in March I will aim to do more living and writing and less reading. Spring is coming and it’s time to be up and doing!

Meanwhile, everything I’ve read since around September last year is briefly reviewed on my Books, etc. page (with last year’s books here.) Some of them are well worth your attention!

Here are the ones I enjoyed most this month:

  • The Divorce Diet, by Ellen Hawley – an upbeat light read with drool-inducing recipes that threaten to tip me off my carb-free lifestyle
  • Where’d You Go, Bernadette, by Maria Semple – one of the best books I’ve read in a long while
  • Wonder, by RJ Palacio – like all the best juvenile and YA fiction, it’ll refresh your literary palate
  • Keto Clarity, by Jimmy Moore – a must-read for anyone interested in the ketogenic way of eating

I didn’t watch many movies, and only one worth sharing:

  • The Longest Day – a powerful and moving docudrama

There was a disturbing trend in that much of my reading this month seemed to be about broken or breaking marriages. That’s a topic I will try to avoid for a while; even when the writing is good, too much of it stops being entertaining.

  1. I read Where’d You Go Bernadette awhile ago and came away very disappointed. I don’t think it’s funny at all.

I’m trying to do more reading. It’s freaking challenge.

    1. It’s so interesting how people respond differently to books. Although I agree with you – I thought it had some very funny episodes, but I wouldn’t call it humor. I wasn’t sure what I thought of it at first, and then I realized, “This is a fantasy! Suspend disbelief, recognize that this is about people with super-powers (exceptional intelligence and apparently limitless money), and float away on the insanity!

What kinds of books do you enjoy?

        1. You sound like me… 🙂 Well, if you haven’t yet discovered Reif Larsen, I highly recommend him! “The Selected Works of TS Spivet is just wonderful” … so much so that I’m a little anxious about the movie, although I don’t think I’ll be able to not see it.

Also, of course, for absurdity, silliness and just enough satire to make you feel intellectually respected, Douglas Adams – both the Hitchhiker series and the two Dirk Gently books – is one of my favorite authors (the movie is awful, though). He also wrote “Last Chance to See”, which is very funny but heartbreaking non-fiction on endangered species. Another of my favorite humor writers is Terry Pratchett, the Discworld series – lightweight in the beginning, got progressively funnier, then became rather dark, presumably when he began developing Alzheimers.

    1. Thanks, OM… 🙂 That’s something I picked up from you … I like being part of a community, and even though I am far too lazy to be a full-on power blogger, I do try to be a good community member.
